We took a break from Star Trek: TNG and started watching Sports Night. It’s really good and streaming on Netflix and you should watch it. One ep left and then it’s back to the final frontier.
Sports Night, West Wing, ST:TNG, and probably a few shoes I can’t remember all contributed to a an unrealistic view of modern working life for me. They propose an idea of workplace filled with passionate, dedicated, funny, and smart people who all work together towards a common goal of success with no back-biting and little, if any, self-congratulation. There is no “I.” Only “us.” It doesn’t matter if it’s diplomatic relations with the Cardassians, leading the free world, or reading sports scores, everyone works together towards the common goal. People cheer together. People laugh, scream, and cry over the trials and tribulations of daily life.
Work isn’t like that. There are dumb people. People concerned for themselves and themselves only. Sometimes, no one tells you that you did a great job, even when you did. Sometimes, no one celebrates a win or mourns a loss.
Most nights, everyone goes home and doesn’t go out drinking together.
