Just got home from seeing ‘The Muppets’
This isn’t a review, but more a collection of thoughts on the movie.
- Jason Segal isn’t supposed to be famous, right? He’s unnaturally tall and not very handsome. He’s an awkward dancer and not the strongest singer. I’m glad he is famous, but he’s not supposed to be.
- Also, how did a guy who’s showed his dong in rated R comedies get put in charge of one of Disney’s (presumably) most promising franchises? Because he really, REALLY loves the Muppets? Who gets away with that? How does someone who shouldn’t be famous get away with that?
- The movie isn’t that great. Fun! It’s delightful to see the Muppets doing their thing again and there a lot of laugh out loud moments. Kids were loving it in the theater. But yeah, it’s not a great movie.
- I quickly became used to the changes in characters voices, but both Kermit and Miss Piggy’s expressions have changed. I don’t know if that’s due to actual changes in the puppet or new muppeteers, but they act a little differently than I remember. I never became used to that.
- There’s great celebrity cameos, but some of them are wasted or weren’t fully realized.
- The movie doesn’t “look” like it had a small budget, but you can tell it is low-budgeted.
- I really enjoyed it, and seeing it with kids in the theater felt like a treat. It’s great watching kids get into something that I think a modern child wouldn’t get into. It reminds you that we are the cynical ones. The ones trying to be ironic, and we force that on kids. Kids are kids and they like things like fart shoes and a group of chickens singing pop songs. Makes me feel better about the future in a small, silly way.
